This is a story about the largest freelance job ever assigned to a single illustrator... me!
Is Debbie Tilley Available?
Is Debbie Tilley available?
On June 28, 1995, yes that was 15 years ago, my rep, Richard Salzman received a call from the art director at Gallaudet University Press. Is
Debbie Tilley available to do samples for an up coming project? We're going to be publishing a signing dictionary for children, needing
around 1000 illustrations.... and that's how it all started....
Fast forward 15 years:
On December 4, 2010, Richard, my rep received an email from the Editorial Director of Gallaudet University press, they were ready to get started
on the Children's Sign Language Dictionary! I think that is the longest lead time in freelance history! As it turned out, I had been illustrating children's picture
books nonstop for a long time. The thought of doing 1,000 individual drawings sounded so great to me, I couldn't wait to get started.......

Correction
I Learned Something New Today...
For the word TELEPHONE I decided to draw Alexander Graham Bell, who invented it. What I learned was, his mother and wife were both deaf, which is why he was interested in experimenting with hearing devices. The result of all of his research resulted in the invention of the telephone! He refused to have a telephone in his study because it annoyed him. I'm pretty sure he started working immediately on inventing the answering machine.

Christmas in July
I have been coming across the word DRESS on my list now for a couple of years. Every time, drawing a big blank. Maybe because I don't wear them much, I don't know, just couldn't bring myself to draw a dress. Then, plink! an idea! The sentence will be, "She loved her new Christmas dress." A lot of times if I stop trying to think of an idea, somewhere in the back of my brain the mulling process starts. When I get back to it I'll get an idea, although two years of mulling is a little ridiculous.
